The basic elements of a magnetic switch are a hermetically sealed switching tube and an actuation magnet. The contacts of the magnetic switch are composed of two flat contact studs which are sealed in a small glass tube filled with inert gas. This switching tube, calls a reed contact, is installed in a metal or plastic housing, adjusted and filled with an elastic filler material to protect it against mechanical damage. The magnetic switch is connected via a sealed cable or plug-type connection. For special applications (i.e. extrem high switching frequency, strong mechanical vibrations) we recommend a sensor with Hall elements. In this version we use a semiconductor component instead of a reed contact.

Function of magnetic switches When approaching a permanent magnet, the contact studs of the reed contact will be magnetised and attracted when exceeding a determined AW-threshold. When closing, the magnetic force rises quadratically and at the same time the air gap becomes smaller so that the contact closes suddenly, like a spring. The very small gap between the contact studs and the low mass yields very good values for switching and bouncing times. Advantages of magnetic switches - non-contact, low wear switching - optimum foolproofness in hostile environments - high switching frequency - long durability - reasonable alternative in comparison to electronic switches - depending on the version it is also possible to switch to high power
